GEOMORPHIC ASSESSMENT AND STREAM RESTORATION DESIGN

End of Pit Lake Design and Permitting, Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd., Hinton, AB

5SSR worked with Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd. to design an end of pit lake and a new channel on the reclaimed mine site, in support of their Phase 1 Reclamation Plan (5SSR photo).

5SSR was retained by Coalspur Mines (Operations) Ltd., to support their Phase 1 Reclamation Plan. Coalspur’s reclamation plan required the inclusion of an end of pit lake to meet their closure objectives. 5SSR’s scope included the design of the end of pit lake and the creation of a new channel on the reclaimed mine site.  Through the careful development of the grading plan for reclamation, 5SSR was able to design a stream that will drain the reclaimed mine site into the lake and a stream that will drain the site into McPherson Creek, which flows along the south side of the site.   5SSR is currently optimizing the design of the lake and the stream to maximize habitat for Athabasca Rainbow Trout, an ‘at risk’ species within the watershed.  5SSR is also developing a habitat bank based on the habitat that will be created in the lake and stream created on the site of the former coal mine.
