Apetowun Creek Restoration Design Review, Hinton, AB

The failure of a mine tailings pond destroyed 12 km of Apetowun Creek (5SSR photo).

Obed Coal Mine experienced a failure of a mine tailings pond which impacted 12 km of Apetowun Creek. This Creek provides habitat for Athabasca Rainbow Trout which is endangered.  5SSR staff were retained by the insurance company that held the policy for damages.  The staff carried out a geomorphic assessment of the creek and the efforts aimed at restoration one year after the failure.  The team was then retained by the insurance company to evaluate the validity of the claim submitted by the mine owner for costs associated with monitoring and restoration.  This included evaluating competing restoration designs prepared by DFO and the mine.  Based on the information provided by the team, the insurance company reached a settlement with the mine.
