FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT AND PERMITTING

North Saskatchewan River Bridge Rehabilitation, Fisheries Act Authorization and Habitat Offsetting/Banking, Canadian National Railway (CN) Edmonton, AB.

5SSR is working with CN to obtain the necessary approvals under the federal Fisheries Act, which includes the design of offsetting (5SSR photo).

CN retained 5SSR to support environmental permitting requirements associated with required bridge rehabilitation works at CN’s Bridge across the North Saskatchewan River at Mie 260.4 on the Wainwright Subdivision. The bridge rehabilitation works include large temporary instream coffer dams that require approvals under the federal Fisheries Act and Alberta Water Act. Due to the scale and duration of the temporary instream works, the project requires Authorization under the federal Fisheries Act, which requires that offsetting be completed to address the unavoidable impacts to fish and fish habitat. 5SSR is working with CN to complete the Authorization application and is designing the proposed offsetting project. The proposed offsetting project focuses on reconnecting a remnant oxbow to create habitat along the Sturgeon River, which is an important tributary to the North Saskatchewan River, to provide rearing habitat for juvenile fish species. 5SSR is working with DFO to use the habitat not required for offsetting to create a fish habitat bank. 5SSR will continue to support this project through construction and post-construction monitoring requirements.
